Biographies
- Chief (MALE, Age: 44) - Former soldier of the Atlasian miliary. Was banished to the Slums. Leading a group of rats called Squealers, determined to restore his people to their former homes.
- Coda (FEMALE, Age: 15) - A possum, not a rat, which causes issues: some Squealers like Kins do not consider her to be part of the group. Ran away from Twinburg after breaking a bobcat's nose. Mother gone, father absent. Disciplined and direct.
- Crix (MALE, Age: 36) - Charmer type. Pink hair, a waistcoat. Bisexual, deflects everything with humor, but genuinely competent and respected. In a relationship with Yarne, whom he calls "Firefly". Calls chief "Bossman"
- Dart (MALE, Age: 31) - One of Chief's go-to subordinates. Trains his body religiously, the strongest rat. Speaks simply with short sentences. Has an inner sensitivity.
- Fennel (FEMALE, Age: 7) - Wears glasses. Fennel's mom died in childbirth, and the father was never known. Whikk volunteered as a sort of grandfatherly role in taking care of her, since many of the others consider her cursed because of her albinism.
- Goldie (FEMALE, Age: 30) - Den mother, Rogue's mother. Wears metal scraps as jewelry, loves gossips. Very protective of her son.
- Juja (FEMALE, Age: 30) - Den mother, mother of Brindle and Heel. Blunt, unpretentious, quick to defend her children from anyone using them to score a point. One of the few who openly backs Chief.
- Kins (MALE, Age: 24) - Always eager to impress Chief. Best friend with Dart. Bright, vocal personality belies a darker pursona lurking under the surface, creeping out especially whenever the Drums or its citizens comes up.
- Lye (MALE, Age: 15) - Merengue's eldest son, unenthusiastic member of the Squealers.
- Merengue (FEMALE, Age: 41) - Head den mother. De facto second-in-command of the Squealers. Mother of three: Lye, Iris and Marsh.
- Rane (FEMALE, Age: 26) - Den mother (despite not being a mom yet). Gentle and conciliatory, the one who apologises for the others and looks after the sick children. Tries to defuse arguments.
- Rogue (MALE, Age: 13) - Goldie's son. Clumsy, permanently hungry, the cinnamon roll of this story :p Runs errands for every den mother at once and forgets what he was sent for. Was friend with Lye.
- Speck (MALE, Age: 34) - A fat mole. Former manager of the largest shipping centre in the Drums, now a black-market merchant at the Cataract and on the government's kill list. Sarcastic. Smarter than he looks. Always tends to withhold information. Wants a way out of Atlasia. (Presumably) murdered at the end of Chapter One.
- Stranger (OTHER) (Name translated as "Estranho") - Someone wearing a mask. Unknown to Chief, shrouded in mystery.
- Whikk (MALE, Age: 68) - Oldest member of the Squealers. Former systems analyst in the Drums. Adherent to the orthodox faith of rats. Takes care of Fennel.
- Wren (MALE, Age: 33) - A blind fox. An information merchant. Seems courteous, but puts a price on everything including jokes. Collects Eonic (Pre-Millennium) technology for reasons he will not tell.
- Yarne (FEMALE, Age: 30) - Den mother, several daughters (Kess is one of them). Confrontational, sarcastic, and the loudest critic of Chief's leadership. In a conflicting relationship with Crix. Asks to speak with Chief privately and is murdered before she can.
